Mr. Lee Unit 1: Media Blog 1 (-isms) - due Sept. 21
For this assignment, you must present a 50 - 100 words synopsis of a media event that you have found and read using the links (your weekly "what's going on in your world" sources....) on our blog. You must relate/connect the event must, in some way, to an "-ism". In class we briefly discussed what -isms are. You may choose to discuss any -ism you see relevant to a recent news event/article. Please be clear to include the title of the article and what news source it is from (this is not part of the word count and should be placed it at the beginning of your post like a title). Beyond just telling us what happened, try to offer insight into "why" it happened or "what" may be the consequences and make sure to clearly show how your chosen "-ism" is connected/related. You need to define the -ism clearly so that the connection is clear to you and the reader. You don't have to quote exactly from a dictionary - you can use your own words to express your understanding. There is a lot going on in our world today so you should have trouble finding an interesting article about a current event. Have fun and challenge yourself!

According to Pakistani Islamic Council, Pakistani men are allowed to beat their wives if their wives don’t comply with their commands. This article points out the way women are exposed to physical abuse which is sexism. In Muslim countries women were banned to vote, get education and loose their hair. This still continues in modern world because men want to satisfy their egos by insulting women. Also, men regard women as physical objects which they can sexually abuse, take their frustration out by beating, and make them do the domestic work. Sexism is still being done by trespassing on uneducated people’s religious beliefs. If men continue bullying women, femicide and violence rates will increase and women population will decrease over time. Sexism is the belief of insulting a gender, refusing gender equality and getting above a gender for being physically stronger.
Sexism in Olympics Coverage

Cory Cordell, a bronze medalist who competed in the 2016 Rio Olympics, was recently mentioned in a news article. However instead of using her name in the article, the authors decided to refer to her as “Wife of Bears’ lineman”. This sparked up a whole new conversation about how this was not the first time that women in the Olympics have been denounced for sexism, in media coverage. The article goes on to state some facts about how women get more coverage on television, but are often held second to their male competitors, even if they are winning more medals. “There’s the guy responsible for turning Katinka Hosszu, his wife, into a whole different swimmer.” Dan Hicks, an NBC Sportscaster stated. This is one of many statements that proove that for women, the related words reference their marital status and their age. We live in a world where men are called “fastest” or “strongest” while women, who are not only women but Olympic medalists, are only called a ”wife”. This type of misogynistic sexism needs to stop. Women are women, their own person, not just a man’s wife.
Aboriginal man wanted to ‘do something nice’ after overhearing racist comments in a Freamantle cafe

A Perth man, Jarred Wall, was having luncher with his family in a Perth cafe and as he heard a group of elderly women discussing Aboriginal people, he was annoyed with what he heard. He heard women saying ‘He got into power because of the color skin.’
The women were talking about the color skin of the mentioned person, so it is considered as racism.
He could have warned them with a tirade but insted he bought them a pot of tea and left a note on the receipt.
On the receipt it was saying ‘Enjoy the tea! Compliment of the 2 aboriginals sitting next to you on table 26’
“At The Sacred Stone Camp, A Coalition Joins Forces To Protect The Land” National Public Radio News:
The news story currently happening in Sacred Stone Camp -a native American territory in North Dakota- narrates the protest of the native tribes against the construction of an oil pipeline. The story figuratively reflects the conflicted combat between environmentalism and industrialism, where environmentalism is defined as advocacy of the protection and improvement of environment and industrialism as a system in which industries and factories are taken as the basis of a country’s economy. It looks like that this conflict, which exists since the industrial revolution, will increasingly continue and be subject to debates and protests. I believe that there should be an intermediate way that protects the environment -our future- and keep countries grow industrially to keep up with the modern world today.
“Man spat at teenage girl on train in sectarian attack” from Scotland’s National Newspaper: The Scotsman
According to British Transport Police, two men at the train station started to insult three teenage girls who were wearing Celtic uniforms, and then one of them spat at one of the girls. Men take courage from being physically stronger than women and think that they are free to violate their rights such as freedom at wearing and independence. That’s why two men at the train station didn’t hesitate to abuse the girls. Feminism is the belief that supports the equality of both sexes in all aspects of public and private life. This incident gives an opportunity to feminists to uprise against the superiority of man that he violated the human rights of woman and impolitely harass the girl by spitting on her. Who knows, if the three Celtic fans were male, the men wouldn’t disturb them. Every human is equal. A man shouldn’t take advantage of woman’s physically weakness at any time. We should avoid sexism, disadvantage or unequality of one gender over the other, from every society.

A South African government official had stated that he is supporting the protests of female students in a high school, who accuse their school administration for operating a racist hair policy. According the students of Pretoria Girls High black pupils in school have been told to straighten their hair. Minister also said that “ Schools should not be used as a platform to discourage students from embracing their African identity.” Even though there is no specific restrictions about a specific hairstyle students are claiming that they are banned from having. These students are just kids it is very wrong to behave them by skin colors and their selection of hairstyle. Racism is all over the world right now. Even in a small high school. By preventing incidents like this we have to say stop to racism forever.

Hermogenes Esperon, 'The worst peace is always better than the best war.' In war, soldiers fight with each other but civilians are always the victim. They must find a solution. Because I don’t want to live with beggar Syrians in my neighborhood. And I’m sure Syrians doesn’t want to live with us too. This war is because of Imperialist forces’ “Democracy” (Greedy). They want resources what Syria has. Just like they did in Iraq, Ottoman Empire, Algeria etc…

A girl named Yasmine Bouzegan Marzouk lost 3 of her family members in the terror attack in Nice on 14 July. She spoke at a national ceremony in tribute to French victims of terrorist attacks, and clearly explains that Islam and terrorism are two different things that shouldn’t be mixed. Currently, these two things are being linked to each other and because of that people sink to wrong thoughts about Islamic world.

France had 2 terrorism attacks in past 3 months. Europe and everyone thinks that they are vulnerable because of these attacks. French president said that they will have state of emergency for 3 months but two days ago he said it may be longer if more attacks happen in these three moths. French government have made some searches in some buildings for past two months. They found bombs, ammo and guns in large quantities. If they didn't make these searches they might be more vulnerable. In these two months France become safer.
Volcanic Eruption Causing Flight Delays, Cancellations in Costa Rica
On Monday, the Turrialba Volcano in Costa Rica erupted, sending ash, gas and aerosols over 3,000 feet into the air and disrupting travel to and from the Central American country. According to Weather.com, the Juan Santamaria International Airport in San Jose was forced to temporarily shut down Monday due to the volcanic eruption. After returning to service for about 30 minutes, the facility was forced to suspend its operations again as concerns that the ash from the volcano would cause problems for the planes. Tobias Bolanos International Airports closed. People think it will affect the tourism in Costa Rica.
BBC News "Pretoria Girls High Racism Protest Backed by SA minister"
A protest of female students in a high school where black students are told to straighten their hair has been supported by a South African government official who finds it racist as well as the students. The students accuse the school of being ignorant against the black culture. This keeps the black students away from embracing their culture and discourages them. The fact that these students are just kids - teenagers proves that racism is all over the world.

Beach for erected by 'Bay boys' surfer gang will be demolished
There is a gang which are a group of territorial surfers and they had beach with taked by illegal roads at Lunada Bay on the Palos Verdes Peninsula, that beach will be demolished soon. Also 'Bay Boys', using violence to peopole, take alchol and drugs in beach. I think it is a good idea to demolish here for stop this bas and illegal things.

There was a huge explosion in Davao city which killed 14 people. Also 71 people were injured. Philippines President called this attack as terrorism. Also, he said that he didn't declare martial law. The cause of the terror attack is unknown, but we know that it happened at 10 P.M at Friday. Also, the President cursed the terrorism and the terror attack.
Youtube Video Sexism And Feminism
On a youtube video that i have watched, there is a women which asks a mans name, he is called Hugh Mungus. When he says his name, the women in the video immediately thinks that he insulted him by calling her huge. Because of his name the women misunderstands what the man says and starts a chaos. She repedeatly asks what the mans name is and every time when the man try to explain himself she immediately starts shouting and yelling that he is being rude and sexist to her. When I watched the video I felt completely humiliated. The women perspective was so narrow that she didn't even tried to understand the man. This is a perfect example of a extremely overrated sexism and feminism.

Because of the recent terrorist actions the world have started to increase the security the October fest is the most recent example of this people were having fun freely until this year but now they have fear. Because of that the government started much more detailed searchs and more cops on the festival area.

İn a church last week there was a boxing promoter said negro to a person in a court. Even the people that are in courts can be racist. İt is very bad that a person says negro to another person. Racism is the worst belief İ think because there is no reason to bully a person because of skin color, that person did not choice his skin color.

A huge terorrist attack may stopped by the profetional team of london anti-terrorist police team. A 33 year old man has been investigeted and arested by detectives because of his suspiciues acts. The order was made by detectives from Scotland Yard's counter-terrorisim commend. The reson fr arresting the man was preparation and instigation of terrorist acts section 41 of the Terrorism act 2000 (Terrorism)
I found this news article online from the Huffington post. Rep.Robert Pittenger (R-N.C.) said Thursday that violent protests that have rattled Charlotte, North Carolina, since police shot a black man to death this week are led by angry black people who hate and envy white people.Robert Pittenger said those protesting police violence are angry because “white people are successful and they’re not.” I think there is an really bad racism example. I think nobody can think they are more human than the others because of their skin colors. I think racism is one on the worst beliefs we are in the 21th century and I think that people shouldn’t have any idea about that person because of his skin color but unfortunately we can see that people judge other people because of their physical appearance.
