Slaughterhouse 5 - Chapters 2 and 3

Over the break you must read chapters 2 and 3 of the novel. Following the examples of chapter 1 in class, find something interesting to say in chapters 2 and 3 of anything that relates to the idea of knowledge and power. Have fun, enjoy the novel, and say something interesting. This post is due on Sunday, April 9th.

Mid-term Exam Redux: Speech

The written responses on the exam were less than satisfactory. By now, you all should be experts at writing a speech, so let's give this another try. Rewrite your speech and post it here by the end of class (if you are absent then you have until tonight). Make sure to include all of the speech elements. If you are wondering "How can I improve my overall English GPA?" here is your answer. Take every assignment, no matter how small, very seriously. Have fun!

Interview Question Sample: If Holden Caulfield were in Istanbul in June 2013, how would he have responded to the Gezi Park protests?

This type of question will really challenge you to think about Holden, about the novel, and connect it to a real life situation. How would Holden respond to the Gezi upheaval of 2013? For your response, consider the following questions:
1. Would he have participated in the protests? Why or why not?
2. If he did participate, what would his protest sign say?
3. How would he feel about Gezi Park? Would he want to preserve the park or use the space for construction of buildings? Why?
4. How would he feel about the protesters? Would he consider them authentic or phony?
5. How would an event like this affect his view of humanity? Of civilization?

The Catcher in the Rye Response - Due February 1st

Once you complete your reading, from pp 1 - 58, the next step is to choose ONE chapter that was particularly interesting to you and write a 150-200 word commentary. Refer to your "Approaching Literary Analysis" question bank, and choose one question that is relevant to the chapter. Do not focus on re-telling the plot, but focus on putting forth your ideas on "what it is all about." Have fun and challenge yourself!
