tuesday night i went to the barrymore theatre on broadway to experience an english translation of eugene ionesco's Exit the King. i highly recommend this play to all, especially my english honors students because it illustrates many of the themes and ideas we are currently studying. the play centers on man's struggle against irrelevance in the universe, the assertion of significance by the ego, and the ultimate disillusionment experienced at the realization of our existential insignificance. the play stars geoffrey rush and susan sarandon, who each give an amazing performance. the play is very dark, yet contains some humorous elements, and overall it is poignant and fascinating.
