laura stasi: When John Proctor refuses to sign his confession, he is signifying the importance of identity. From the first day of life, a person has a name. It is how one is identified and it completes a person. Proctor refuse to sign his name because he knows that what he confessed is a lie, and that he is innocent. To sign his name on the confession, Proctor would be "giving (them) his soul" (143). Therefore, he would be left with nothing. It is Proctor's belief that to give one's name away is to give one's soul away as well. Without his name, Proctor would just be an empty shell, and as a result, would rather die than sign the confession.
